He received a law degree, and he majored in criminal law and forensic sciences from Universidad Católica de Colombia.
His professional career in the Judicial Branch began in 1987 several positions in municipal criminal courts, courts of instruction and higher courts.
In 1992, he joined the Attorney General’s Office in the position of deputy clerk assigned to the Unit of Delegate Prosecutors before the Supreme Court of Justice. He held the position known as profesional Universitario, advisor, private secretary and Secretary of Legal Affairs to the Attorney General´s Office in different periods.
During his wide institutional career, he was a local prosecutor at the Sectional Office in Bogotá, a sectional prosecutor in Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Unit, a prosecutor to the Counter-Terrorism Unit and a specialized prosecutor in the so-called Unidad Nacional de Interdicción Marítima (Unaim) (National Maritime Interdiction Unit).
For the last three years he was assigned to the Special Directorate against Drug Trafficking in which he led high-impact operations against transnational drug trafficking and coordinated investigative work with different embassies and international agencies to confront this scourge and its related crimes.
In 2019, Gabriel Fernando Sandoval Vargas won the Enrique Low Murtra award, which is awarded to the most outstanding members of the institution.
