The Attorney General, Francisco Barbosa, in the company of Deputy Attorney Martha Mancera and the Delegate Director on Public Safety Luisa Fernanda Obando, announced important results obtained by the institution in the fight against violence towards women in the country.

The institution consolidated strategies to achieve a comprehensive approach to cases on the crime of domestic violence through Directive 001 of March 16, 2021 and Resolution 0-0858 of May 20, through which the national working group Grupo de Trabajo Nacional de Violencia de Género was created to deal with crimes that affect Women, Boys, Girls and Adolescents.

This group has the important function of strengthening criminal action and investigation of criminal phenomena such as domestic violence, femicides, sexual violence, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and the trafficking of girls, boys and adolescents, among others.

In the framework of the issuance of the directive and the resolution, the Office of the Prosecutor has obtained, among others, the following results:

  • A councilor who allegedly attacked his former partner in Norte de Santander was sent to prison

The Attorney General announced the prosecution of councilor Deiby Alberto Arias Quintero, by a prosecutor belonging to the national working group Grupo de Trabajo Nacional de Violencia de Género, as allegedly responsible for the crimes of a violent sexual act and domestic violence.

The facts took place on May 7 when Arias Quintero, who was arrested on June 19, allegedly attacked his former partner on several occasions in the building where they lived in Ocaña (Norte de Santander).

A supervisory judge imposed a prison sentence against the defendant

  • A person was brought before a judge for the commission of femicide in Garzón (Huila)

For his alleged responsibility in the death of his former partner, Leonidas Carrillo Escobar was charged with femicide.

The facts took place on June 20 at a farm located in a village known Los Pinos in the municipality of Garzón where Carrillo Escobar repeatedly attacked the victim with a knife.

According to what was established, the woman tried to ask for help, but when the owner of the farm came to help her, she had already died due to the seriousness of her injuries.

The defendant who was arrested by the Police at a gas station in that municipality pleaded guilty to the charges and was sent to prison by a judge.

“These are powerful messages for the protection of historically affected groups and vulnerable groups. Women, boys, girls, and adolescents can rely on the Attorney General’s Office”, concluded the Attorney Barbosa.
