This unit will have technical support and accompanying of the USAID agency.

The Attorney General, Francisco Barbosa Delgado; and the representative in Colombia of the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID), Lawrence J. Sacks, signed a memorandum of understanding that will strengthen institutional capacity in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the commission of environmental crimes.

“This is a work that reaffirms the commitment and the fight in favor of our environment and, at the same time, it seeks to attack illegal mining, the cutting down off of trees and the planting of illicit crops that has generated multiple problems in this area of the country”, stated the Attorney General.

In this sense, the Office of the Attorney General will create and launch the Unit against Deforestation, which will operate in San José del Guaviare (Guaviare) on an itinerant basis and will receive technical assistance and specialized support from USAID.

“It is a great honor and privilege for us to support the creation of the new unit. For this reason, we hope that the memorandum of understanding will strengthen the Prosecutor’s Office in the investigation of cases of environmental crimes and in the protection of environmental leaders” stated the USAID representative.

This initiative seeks to act promptly and emphatically with respect to the different activities which are not allowed in the Amazon and in reserve areas and special environmental protection.
