The victim of extortion was murdered for refusing to pay a sum that was demanded from prison.
The evidence presented by the Attorney General’s Office allowed a judge to sentence Diego Andrés Peña Ramírez, 26, to 40 years and 10 months in prison as responsible for the death of a businessman murdered on May 8, 2022 in Aguas Claras area of Granada (Meta).
The investigation, that was led by a specialized prosecutor of Gaula, showed that the convicted man killed the victim since he refused to continue paying the sums that were demanded since March 2022. The defendant was found responsible for aggravated homicide and manufacture, trafficking, possession of firearms.
According to the investigation, the crime was committed by Peña Ramírez who was part of an illegal organization that committed crimes for the so-called Clan del Golfo in San Martín (Meta). The criminal network was led by Poveda Quintero brothers, alias Juanito, Meneo and Jordi, who allegedly threatened people through phone calls, ordered murders of cattle breeders, merchants and businessmen from Ariari (Meta) while being in prison.
On the day of the facts, the victim and his wife were in a commercial establishment that they owned, where the convicted man entered twice to buy candy. He then shot the merchant in the head. Once the crime was committed, Peña Ramírez fled the scene.
The convicted man was arrested by the National Police on August 1st 2022, in the municipality of Fuentedeoro (Meta), and was sent to prison at the request of the Office of the Attorney General.
