Both convicted men received sentences of more than 16 years in prison.
The evidence provided by a prosecutor of the so-called Unidad Especial de Investigación – UEI (Special Investigation Unit) allowed a judge to sentence Miller Arley Montaño Cardona to 16 years and 9 months in prison for the murder of social leader María Elvia Gómez de Gil, whose crime was committed on April 29, 2022, in El Peñol (Antioquia).
The sentence was imposed after the defendant freely and spontaneously pleaded guilty to homicide and qualified theft, both aggravated.
The investigation revealed that on the day of the events, the defendant, in the company of other men, arrived at the victim’s house (64-year-old) and using the excuse of seeing some lots that the woman was selling, they entered the residence and subdued her.
Investigations established that the female leader was tied, a rib was fractured, and she was killed by strangulation. Once the murder was committed, the perpetrators began a search for a large sum of money that they believed the woman had in her house. When they did not find the money, they took jewelry valued at 3 million COP.
The conviction against Montaño Cardona was based on these facts, and was disbarred from the practice of public functions for 16 years and 9 months. He was also denied any benefits, and he was sentenced to prison.
This is the second conviction related to the death of María Elvia Gómez de Gil. The technical tests carried out during the investigation led Juan David López García to plead guilty and therefore, he was sentenced to 16 years and 9 months in prison.
