The illegal economic demands would reach 50 million COP

At the request of the Attorney General’s Office, a judge issued a prison sentence against Miguel Ángel Sánchez Reyes, allegedly responsible for extorting a 71-year-old peasant woman who lives in San Juan de Betulia (Sucre).

According to the investigation, in January 2016 the victim was threatened with death if she did not pay 15 million COP. Therefore, the woman had to sell animals such as bulls and pigs to be able to collect the money.

The intimidation continued for several years. They demanded the payment of 30 million COP and then it increased to 50 million COP. This last economic demand took place on May 4th

Gaula-Police coordinated a controlled delivery of money which allowed the arrest of Sánchez Reyes on May 9 in the public market of Corozal (Sucre).

A specialized prosecutor in Gaula Sucre charged the defendant with aggravated extortion and attempted extortion. He did not plead guilty to the charges.
