As a result of joint and fast investigative action carried out by the Attorney General’s Office and the National Police, the alleged perpetrator of the sexual conducts against at least six children who were in the care of a nursery in the Santa Cruz neighborhood, in Medellin, Antioquia was identified and arrested.
The operation was carried out in Santa Rosa de Osos (Antioquia). The detainee, who worked in the nursery as a nutrition assistant will be brought before a judge. The Office of the Attorney General will charge him with abusive sexual assault with a minor under the age of 14 and aggravated abusive sexual acts with a minor under the age of 14.
“For the Office of the Attorney General, the girls’, boys’ and adolescents’ lives and rights are a priority, that is why we put our capacity to defend them and to clarify the criminal acts that affect them,” said the Attorney General, Francisco Barbosa Delgado, when announcing this judicial result.
At the beginning, the events were reported on June 28 by one of the minors’ parents. Afterwards, more families went to the Center for Attention to Victims of Sexual Violence (Centro de Atención Integral a Víctimas de Agresión Sexual (Caivas) in Spanish) in Medellín and reported the sexual assault against their children and explained in detail the unusual change in behavior that minors had in recent days.
Immediately, the Office of the Attorney General activated an assistance protocol composed of a differential and gender approach team that includes five prosecutors (one from the national working group on gender-based violence Grupo de Trabajo Nacional de Violencia de Género and four of the Sectional Office in Medellín), in addition to psychologists, medical examiners and CTI investigators and the National Police.
This interdisciplinary team advanced in the compilation of evidence against the alleged aggressor. For now, the evidence shows that at least six minors have been abused.
In the course of the investigative process, it has been coordinated with the welfare Colombian institute Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar ICBF to set up mechanisms to restore the rights of the affected children. Additionally, it was requested the support of the Public Ministry, Legal Medicine, and hospitals to carry out medical examinations.
“We call on citizens to report any type of abuse against women, girls, boys, and adolescents, with the complete confidence that this institution will provide comprehensive investigations to find those responsible for these acts that our country repudiates”, concluded the Attorney General Barbosa Delgado.
