After solving an appeal filed by the Office of the Attorney General, the Criminal Chamber of the Superior Court of Medellín revoked the judgement of acquittal of 28-year-old Juan Guillermo Garzón Taborda and sentenced him to 37 years and 6 months in prison for the murder of his 30-month-old stepdaughter.

On March 29, 2016, the child was taken to a health center with no vital signs. This center was located in a small town denominated San Antonio de Prado  (Antioquia) and her body was sent to the Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences Institute (Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses) where experts determined that the cause of death was a severe liver trauma.
