Within the framework of the joint work carried out by the Attorney General’s Office of Colombia and the Public Ministry of the Republic of Paraguay, the “Agreement to create a Joint Investigation Team between the Public Ministry of the Republic of Paraguay and the Attorney General’s Office of Colombia” was signed today in a virtual event, whose main purpose is to coordinate, in a comprehensive manner, the actions and tasks that contribute to the development of investigations related to the murder of the Paraguayan prosecutor, Marcelo Daniel Pecci Albertini, which took place on May 10, 2022, in Barú Island, Colombia.

The creation of this Joint Investigation Team (Equipo Conjunto de Investigación-ECI) is the result of a coordinated work between the Colombian and Paraguayan authorities, and responds to the need to strengthen the mechanisms of legal cooperation between both entities. Through this mechanism, it will be possible to exchange information, and evidence necessary to move forward on investigative work and criminal proceedings opened in each State, and thus, to promote, among others, the search for those who perpetrated the murder of prosecutor Pecci, as well as the identification or localization of assets that can be seized for being derived from criminal activities linked to this crime.

In exercise of her constitutional and legal powers, the Attorney General of Colombia, Luz Adriana Camargo Garzón, delegated the Director specialized in the fight against Criminal Organizations, Raúl Humberto González Flechas, to sign the Agreement. On the part of the Paraguayan authorities, it was signed by the Deputy Prosecutor of the Unit specialized in the Fight against Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime, Matilde Elena Moreno Irigoitia, who was delegated by the Attorney General of the Republic of Paraguay, Emiliano Rolón.

This Agreement will last one (1) year, with the possibility of being extended by mutual agreement.
