A prosecutor belonging to Gaula Unit of the Sectional Office in Tolima achieved a  prison sentence on three men investigated for the crime of aggravated extortion under the modality of creating false profiles on social networks in facts that occurred in 2019 and 2020.

Mauricio Garay Pérez, Edilio Palma Leal and Fernando Garay Pérez, were arrested in coordination with CTI investigators and the National Police in Chaparral (Tolima), where the defendants lived.

The Prosecutor’s Office accused them of participating in an criminal group kown as ‘El Paraíso’, apparently involved in extortion under the modus operandi of contacting the victims through social networks with the use of false profiles.

The aim was to gain the trust of the victims to convince them to exchange intimate photographs, and then demand them large sums of money in exchange for not disclosing the screenshots of the conversations and damaging their reputation with family and friends.

None of the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought by the prosecutor’s delegate in two cases.
