A preventive detention order for Inpec guards was issued since they were allegedly involved in extortions in La Modelo prison

At the request of the General Attorney´s Office, the 14th Circuit Court in Bogotá which has jurisdiction over this matter (juez de conocimiento), ordered five guards working at prison Instituto Nacional Penitenciario y carcelario –INPEC  to serve a term in prison. They were allegedly involved in extorting inmates at La Modelo prison.

According to investigations, the defendants were involved in irregular transfers of inmates to other areas with high risk prisoners. If inmates wanted to be returned to their area they would pay between 3, 5 or 10 million pesos depending the victims’ profile.
