The Attorney General, Eduardo Montealegre Lynett stated that entrepreneurs and cattle raisers who financed paramilitaries groups for many years should also be subjected to transitional justice in order not to expose themselves to up to 15 years in prison.
During the forum Peace Process: What are Colombian citizens going to approve? (in spanish Proceso de Paz: ¿Qué Van a Aprobar los Colombianos? which took place at Universidad El Rosario, the Attorney General stated that concerning the process known as Justice and Peace Process the country has worked on the main responsible individuals and has carried out more than thirty thousand demobilizations. He also mentioned “We are focused on the main responsible, hierarchies, investigations and prosecutions of mid-level guerrilla leaders, in many cases founding members of the paramilitary groups were exonerated”. “However, a serious investigation concerning the economic environment has not begun. We will go deeper into the political environment that surrounded paramilitary groups, entrepreneurs, cattle raisers, people who financed paramilitary groups in the regions. I consider that there is an unfinished chapter…My proposal is that they must be subjected to transitional justice. Otherwise, they will face up to fifteen years prison sentences or crimes against humanity”.
The senior official´s approach pointed out that in relation to them, transitional justice mechanisms authorized by the Constitution must be used, such as investigations and extrajudicial punishment. “In relation to them, I think that that we should not prosecute the conflict. All the armed conflict should not be prosecuted” ; the country must focus on people who financed paramilitary groups, in terms of reparation and truth.
