The Colombian Attorney General Office assigned several distinguished CTI prosecutors to investigate the death of David Urrego Reyes, a student from Gimnasio Castillo Campestre school located in Tenjo who committed suicide last august 4th, 2014 since (according to letters he wrote to his relatives) he faced discrimination acts at school due to his sexual preference.
The senior official, Eduardo Montealegre Lynett stated during a press release that in regard to the development of the case, the Attorney General´s Office summoned the director, the psychologist and a teacher from the institution in order to be interrogated.
“These people were summoned in order to explain the context, previous and following circumstances to this suicide”.
The Attorney General´s Office ordered to conduct inspections at the Colombian Family Welfare Institute (ICBF), Departmental Education Secretary in Cundinamarca and also at the above mentioned school.
The Attorney General send a message to all school directors in the country, parents and students: “the Colombian criminal legislation penalizes discrimination acts. Schools cannot invade students’ privacy since there is a fundamental right: free development of personality. School directors cannot interfere with students private fields”.
Montealegre Lynett emphasized that in those cases where damages to students’ integrity are committed due to discrimination acts, school directors could be liable for omission and damages.
This investigation is supported by forensic psychologists. The Attorney General´s office has activated line 3506011064 to receive information concerning case of Sergio David Urrego Reyes and assures that the informant’s identity will not be revealed.
