Attorney General’s Office will summon the retired General Rito Alejo Del Río to declare about the facts which caused comedian Jaime´s Garzón death on august 13th 1999.
The Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Jorge Fernando Perdomo said that Del Rio was summoned to declare since he was the immediate superior of retired Colonel (r) Eliezer Jorge Plazas Acevedo during the occurrence of the events. Last month, Plazas Acevedo was detained as he was allegedly responsible for the death of Garzón.
Senior Offical Perdomo said that the Attorney General´s Office has been promoting this process since the chain of command which caused this death fifteen years ago has been already established.
He also stated that there is a person who was convicted and that alias Don Berna will be heard despite the fact that he has talked about this subject in the justice and peace processes.
Crimes such as procedural fraud and perjury were not investigated at the appropriate time but the Attorney General´s Office is conducting the necessary inquiries in order to determine how attempts were made to divert the investigation. In addition, senior official stated that the Attorney General´s Office is trying to establish whether other members of the police forces participated in this crime.
