The Ecuadorian citizen Daniel Agustín Bajaña Guzmán accused of having intercepted the email of former vice president Francisco Santos Calderón, was arrested by The Criminal Investigation Team (CTI) belonging to the  Attorney General Office.

“The operative was performed at the area of Gorgona, municipality of Candelaria (Valle del Cauca)”, explained the National Director of CTI, Danny Julián Quintana. He also stated that this is part of the investigation conducted by the Attorney General Office regarding the illegal interceptions to politics carried out by some people.

Bajaña will be prosecuted for the alleged commission of illegal access to a computer system, computer data interception, espionage and conspiracy. The arrest was carried out since there was a risk that the Ecuadorian citizen would escape and would not appear before the judges at the  preliminary hearings.

Quintana said that “Mr. Bajaña intercepted Francisco Santos emails as well as his  secretary emails in order to have access to the former vice president email. He illegally obtained privileged intelligence information and disclosed privileged information”.

In the coming hours, hearings will be held at  Paloquemao Judicial Complex to legalize his detention, and bring charges against him. Likewise, it will be requested his detention in a prison facility.

The CTI Director stated that this process derives from the investigation conducted by the attorney General Office regarding the case of interceptions to the communications of the delegates and participants in the peace process taking  place in Habana (Cuba) which has led  to the arrest of Andrés Sepúlveda, alias El Calvo.
