The Criminal Cassation Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice confirmed the sentence of 27 years in prison that had been imposed by a judge of the republic against the former mayor of Cúcuta (Norte de Santander) Ramiro Suárez Corzo.
In denying of cassation appeal, the Court upheld the issues raised by the Human Rights Unit of the Attorney´s Office, which designates it as the determiner of the murder of the legal advisor of the Mayor Enrique Florez Ramirez on October 6, 2003. Death would have been caused by paramilitary groups in the region. Precisely the people who participated in the killing served as witnesses against Suarez.
In the same sentence, the former Mayor Suarez Corso was sentenced to the inability to exercise public office for a period of 20 years.
