The Special Unit of Investigation (Unidad Especial de Investigación UEI) of the Office of the Attorney General managed to begin a legal process against Ronald Ronaldo Echavarría Arango, alias El Zarco, considered the maximum leader of the organized criminal group ‘La Agonía’, for his alleged participation in the murder of the leader Liliana Patricia Cataño Montoya, which took place in the so-called Comuna 13 in Medellín (Antioquia).

The Office of the Attorney General charged him with aggravated murder, aggravated criminal conspiracy, manufacturing, trafficking and possession of firearms. The defendant did not plead guilty to the charges and he must serve a prison term

According to the investigation, Liliana Patricia Cataño Montoya promoted the assignment of lands to relocate people who lost their homes in a fire that took place in a sector named  Altos de la Virgen. The organization ‘La Agonía’ was allegedly  against the process because it was making progress without the consent of the ringleaders and it was going to be developed in an area that was of their interest. In this sense, the murder of the female community leader was ordered on October 18, 2017.

With the arrest of alias Zarco, the Special Unit of Investigations was able to fully clarify this crime. The intellectual and material authors were arrested and prosecuted. Four processes are in the trial stage and another case precluded since a member of the organization ‘La Agonía’ died.
