The Attorney General, Eduardo Montealegre Lynett, highlighted the importance of implementing mechanisms of cooperation to consolidate peace in Colombia during the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between the Office of the Attorney General, educational institution Institución Universitaria Conocimiento e Innovación para la Justicia and the United States Agency for International Development USAID.

The purpose of this memorandum is to work together for the respect of fundamental rights, for development of a prompt and effective justice for citizens, to assure victim´s rights in Colombia, to strengthen investigations and criminal prosecutions concerning violence based in gender and contribute to transparency of electoral processes.

“This agreement has high contents of human rights protection. In order to achieve a solution for conflict, it is important strong investigations regarding human rights, reparation for damages caused to victims, investigations in context to interpret criminal organizations that committed serious violations of human rights and a criteria of prioritization. Our priority is that by the end of this year, specifically in December, investigations concerning maximum FARC and ELN members who committed serious human rights violations be finished” stated General Attorney Montealegre.

Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Colombian Attorney General, Eduardo Montealegre Lynnet; the director of Institución Universitaria Conocimiento e Innovación para la Justicia (CIJ), César Augusto Solanilla Chavarro and the United States Agency for International Development USAID Interim director, Lawrence Rubey.

The senior Officer also expressed his gratitude for the assistance of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Colombia, Todd Howland.
