The deputy attorney general of nation, Jorge Fernando Perdomo, announced the opening of preliminary investigations for money laundering through electoral campaigns facade, to launder mafia money.
As he explained it during the Forum “electoral process and organization: competent authorities for the elections,” there is an exotic crime in the current electoral process wich is money laundering “the truth is that we already have reports of some campaigns that are considered campaigns facade. That is, people who participate in the election spending important resources, not with the goal of winning but with the aim of incorporating, under color of law, monies that are illegal economic stream “.
He also announced that by a complaint filed by the Housing Minister, Luis Felipe Henao, initiated a preliminary investigation in the case of a candidate who offered access to free housing programs. “We have a complaint now that we are carrying in the Prosecutor’s Office about a candidate in a Department in the North of the country, candidate to the House of representatives that offered as electoral promise participation in free housing”.
Likewise, there is another investigation of another candidate for the House of representatives which provides school kits to their constituents.
The Deputy Attorney explained that the crime of voter fraud is different from corruption to the voters; While the second is vote-buying, the first is as a scam or a fraud to person to vote in a certain way promising him something which can not meet.
Within the work being conducted by the Prosecutor with a view to the upcoming elections, the deputy prosecutor explained that the 11 electoral offenses under the Criminal Code, 8 of them have minimum sentence for more than four years imprisonment for, what allowing these cases allows preventive detention as a security measure, in addition to other offenses such as money laundering, bribery, malfeasance and political intervention.
The deputy prosecutor announced that during the next election day 42 prosecutors and 62 investigators across the country will be in charge of complaints, claima and investigations that arise before, during and after the elections.
