Juan Francisco Gómez Cerchar, Governor of la Guajira, was sheltered with assurance measure without the benefit of release from prison for charges of concert to commit a crime and aggravated murder.

Measure of assurance, a delegate attorney before the Supreme Court of Justice, has to do with their links to paramilitary groups and the killing of three people: Luis Lopez Peralta, Barrancas Councilor, in events that occurred on February 26, 1997; Luis Alejandro Rodriguez Frias and Rosa Mercedes Cabrera Alfaro, regional farmers whose murder attributed to men under Marcos Figueroa command, supported by Gomez Cerchar with weapons, vehicles and communications equipment.

Investigations on these facts were found with inhibitory decisions and were reopened based on testimonies of several demobilized, including Salvatore Mancuso, and victims family.

The Attorney in the case also ordered that the Governor Juan Francisco Gomez Cerchar be transferred to La Picota prison in Bogota.
