After endorsing the evidence material presented by a Prosecutor’s Office, Luis Andres Vargas Pestana and Carlos Ivan Sierra Saavedra (former soldiers) were remanded in custody by the Third Mixed Jurisdiction Court in Turbo (Antioquia), acting as Supervisory Court, for the murder of the priest of Acandí town (Chocó), Gaulberto Antonio Oviedo Arrieta.
The priest was killed with a cutting weapon, on September 13, 2011, when he was sleeping in his house located in the small town of Capurgana, and in accordance with the investigation conducted by a Sectional Prosecutor in Chocó, the motive was related to the theft of money and jewels owned by the victim.
By the time of the facts, Pestana Vargas and Sierra Saavedra were part of a contingent of peasant soldiers attached to the battalion Francisco de Paula Velez of the 17th Brigade, based in Carepa (Antioquia). The defendants were not agreed to accept charges brought by the prosecutor’s office for the offense of aggravated homicide, and they were imprisoned in El Reposo jail – Apartadó town.
