On Sunday 29th, The Office of the Attorney General arrested Carlos Mario Álvarez Morales, major of the city of Armenia (2015-2019) for allegedly taking possession of funds related to contracts on roads and bridges which belonged to development works for the city.

Background

Based on confessions, testimonies, written and filmic documents, prosecutors who have jurisdiction over this matter found that in 2015, the current major of Armenía (main city of Quindío) agreed with Francisco Javier Valencia, husband of former major Luz Piedad Valencia, to provide him the amount of 6.000’000.000 pesos to finance his campaign. Since these funds partially derived from contracts related to works in Armenia, these would have to be returned to contractor Fernando Diez Cardona through other contacts that should be awarded by the new authority.
