{"id":42599,"date":"2024-08-02T07:08:13","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T12:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fiscalia.gov.co\/colombia\/en\/?p=42599"},"modified":"2024-08-02T17:01:39","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T22:01:39","slug":"the-office-of-the-attorney-general-achieved-a-second-conviction-for-the-murder-of-leader-maria-elvia-gomez-de-gil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiscalia.gov.co\/colombia\/en\/2024\/08\/02\/the-office-of-the-attorney-general-achieved-a-second-conviction-for-the-murder-of-leader-maria-elvia-gomez-de-gil\/","title":{"rendered":"The Office of the Attorney General achieved a second conviction for the murder of leader Mar\u00eda Elvia G\u00f3mez de Gil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both convicted men received sentences of more than 16 years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evidence provided by a prosecutor of the so-called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unidad Especial de Investigaci\u00f3n &#8211; UEI<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Special Investigation Unit) allowed a judge to sentence Miller Arley Monta\u00f1o Cardona to 16 years and 9 months in prison for the murder of social leader Mar\u00eda Elvia G\u00f3mez de Gil, whose crime was committed on April 29, 2022, in El Pe\u00f1ol (Antioquia).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sentence was imposed after the defendant freely and spontaneously pleaded guilty to homicide and qualified theft, both aggravated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The investigation revealed that on the day of the events, the defendant, in the company of other men, arrived at the victim&#8217;s house (64-year-old) and using the excuse of seeing some lots that the woman was selling, they entered the residence and subdued her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investigations established that the female leader was tied, a rib was fractured, and she was killed by strangulation. Once the murder was committed, the perpetrators began a search for a large sum of money that they believed the woman had in her house. When they did not find the money, they took jewelry valued at 3 million COP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conviction against Monta\u00f1o Cardona was based on these facts, and was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disbarred from the practice of public functions <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for 16 years and 9 months. He was also denied any benefits, and he was sentenced to prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the second conviction related to the death of Mar\u00eda Elvia G\u00f3mez de Gil. The technical tests carried out during the investigation led Juan David L\u00f3pez Garc\u00eda to plead guilty and therefore, he was sentenced to 16 years and 9 months in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The information contained in this press release corresponds to the narration of the objective news provided by the officials in charge of carrying out criminal investigations within the Office of the Attorney General.
